What is ARPA?
ARPA (the American Rescue Plan Act) distributed money directly to local leaders to decide how best to serve their own communities. These are the facts:
- ARPA allocated $65.1 billion in direct flexible aid to every county in the United States.
- The amount each county received was based on its population. More populous counties got larger allocations.
- Funds could be used for public health costs, economic stabilization and recovery efforts, replacing lost government revenue, premium pay for essential workers, and water, sewer and broadband infrastructure.
- The deadline for counties to obligate their ARPA funds is December 31, 2024. All funds must be fully expended by December 31, 2026.
